Allie Arnst – Owner of Meridian Sound Therapy and Acutonics

On March 10th, you have the chance to learn from Allie and experience the vibration of the Acutonics System through the tools of her trade – tuning forks.  You will also be treated to an experience with a Singing Bowl.  While referred to as Tibetan, this type of Singing Bowl originated in Nepal.

Acutonics is used in many ways, including balancing and haromonizing chakras.  For those who are new to this idea, the 7 major chakras are like mini energy wheels. Sometimes one or more of our charkas become weakened due to stress and we feel out of balance.  One of the reasons Acutonics works so well is directly related to the composition of our human bodies – we are 70% water.  Sound travels 4 times faster in water than in air.  This makes the human body the perfect receptor for healing through vibrational sound.

Allie’s Background:

After studying psychology at the University of Calgary and working for 15+ years in good paying jobs as an executive assistant, Allie Arnst challenged herself to do what she had always wanted to do – become a health practitioner and start her own business.  What’s really cool is that Allie chose Penticton as the city where she would locate her clinic. You will find Meridian Sound Therapy and Acutonics at #2 – 230 Martin Street (close to the Pasta Factory).

The journey to finding the right occupation for our interests and passion is exactly that – a journey.  Natural and ancient therapies always excited Allie.  But so too did the ideas of owning a spa, studying massage therapy, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. So she remained in the corporate world until 2010 when she and her partner moved from Calgary to Keremeos.

By February of 2011, Allie had chosen her new path – Sound Therapy, which is rooted in traditional Chinese Medicine.  She studied Acutonics (vibrational energy healing) at the Traditional Chinese Medical Clinic of Armstrong.  Allie worked 1:1 with her teacher, studying the healing methods of sound therapy and vibrational energy work.  The tools of her trade include tuning forks, Tibetan bowls, bells and other sound therapy instruments. Her training included the theories and concepts of traditional Chinese medicine. Allie had found her niche!  Her studies in psychology and sound therapy are a perfect match for working with and relating to her clients.

Meet Theresa Nolet

THERESA NOLET HAS TWO PASSIONS: ESTATE JEWELLERY AND

FINDING HOMES FOR WILD/FERAL HORSES

I met THERESA NOLET in 1998 through the Okanagan Falls Chamber of Commerce.  This charming woman has a depth and intelligence about her that draws you in and makes you want to know more about what she knows, which is a lot!

Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Theresa learned to love everything about jewelry from her mother.  She graduated with honors in Gemology in 1993 from George Brown College in Toronto before moving to BC. Theresa and her husband traveled through our beautiful valley and, luckily for us, established JARDIN ESTATE JEWELERS AND ANTIQUES in Okanagan Falls

These days, Theresa feels torn between her 2 passions; estate jewelry and animals, especially our local wild/feral horses.  While Theresa never considered herself to be a “horse person”, she became one when she moved to the West Bench area of Penticton. Each winter, the wild horses from the Penticton Indian Band Reserve come down from the hills to graze on the large lawns in her neighborhood. Some residents find these visits by wild horses annoying, but others, like Theresa, find them beautiful.

When Theresa moved to the West Bench, she had no inkling she would become involved with wild horses.  That is, until she became aware of the harsh realities of their lives“They struggle on a daily basis for food and especially water. They are chased by all-terrain vehicles and are shot at with paint ball guns by angry residents. Most meet the end of their lives in a slaughter house kill box, where they are butchered for meat that is shipped overseas to countries like Japan, France and Belgium, where horse meat is a cultural delicacy. Once I became aware of these details, I got more and more involved in trying to change their situation locally.”

She contacted Deborah Silk from CRITTERAID.  Theresa had met Deborah when Critteraid took on the care of, Faith, a wild horse that was literally found frozen to the ground one winter.  After several meetings, Deborah put together a proposal called PROJECT EQUUS that provides options for how these local wild horses can be humanely managed.

In April of 2009, Theresa purchased 4 forlorn-looking yearling horses from a kill buyer at the auction in Okanagan Falls. The kill buyer would not sell the 4 horses to Theresa unless she had somewhere to take them.  A total stranger stepped up and said to the kill buyer, “She can keep them at my place for a few weeks”. Theresa’s fate was sealed.  She had officially entered the world of horse rescue!

It was Theresa’s intention to get the 4 horses adopted. She quickly found homes for 2 and had enquiries for a third, but none was a good match. The last horse, ‘Little Girl’, was so emaciated and bald from lice that no one wanted her. That’s when Theresa’s husband said, “Well, we can just fence our own property and take them home”.  They are now the proud owners of 4 rescued horses.

In February of 2011, The Kamloops News did an exposé to let people know that our Provincial Government was rounding up horses on crown land and sending them to auction, which 99% of the time means slaughter.  Theresa approached Critteraid to ask if that organization would consider asking the Ministry to turn the remaining horses over to Project Equus, which they did. Good work!

In March this year, Theresa and several volunteers made three trips to Kamloops to rescue 6 wild horses, one of which was a mare heavy with foal. One of the mares was previously domesticated; she responded quickly to being in captivity. She too was pregnant as was a 3rd mare. Loving homes have been found for 2 of the 6 horses. They are training the others and are hopeful that suitable homes for them will soon be found.  There’s a nice video on the PROJECT EQUUS tab (Critteraid’s website).   A bay filly was born May 5th and the team is awaiting the births of the other 2 foals.

I asked Theresa to share a favorite saying, and I laughed because it’s perfect!  ” Information is never harmful. “ Learning about the wild horses has changed the direction of Theresa’s life in ways she could never have imagined. Here’s another: “If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected.”(CHIEF SEATTLE OF THE SUWAMISH TRIBE, letter to President Franklin)

Friends, I’d love you to meet Theresa Nolet to both experience her fantastic store and ask questions about Project Equus. You can find her Monday through Saturday at Jardin Estate Jewelry and Antiques in Okanagan Falls.

Meet Michelle Tremblay

MICHELLE TREMBLAY’S PASSION FOR TEACHING SURFACED 5 YEARS AGO WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PILOT A PROGRAM CALLED ‘FIT 4 DEFENSE’ IN SCHOOLS

I met Michelle Tremblay in 2009 when she facilitated a series of public speaking workshops for Penticton professionals.  From the get-go it was clear that Michelle walks her talk, which is to help others to step into their own greatness. Passionate, energetic and positive, one of Michelle’s favourite quotes is an inspiring excerpt from a poem by Marianne Williamson: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate/our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure/it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.”

Born in Kamloops, Michelle has chosen Kelowna as her home because it provides everything that she enjoys: the outdoors, great friends, wine, a variety of restaurants, entertainment and the peace and tranquility of the beautiful lake and mountains. While based in Kelowna, Michelle is mobile with her work through the full extent of the Okanagan Valley and beyond.

The range of services Michelle offers through her business, Eve-olutions Mind and Body , includes life, employment and leadership-related workshops as well as life coaching for those who are transitioning through career change and personal goals.  But if truth be known, Michelle’s first love is working with and empowering youth.

Her credentials are considerable. Michelle is a Certified Life Coach and holds a Provincial Instructor’s Diploma. In the athletics arena, she has earned 2 National Coaching Certificates, has a second degree Chito-ryu karate black belt and is a Master Trainer\Instructor for the anti- bully program Fit4Defense in the schools and communities of BC as well as two other provinces (AB and ON).

There was no hesitation when I asked Michelle why she is so passionate about working with youth: Being a BIG kid at heart, it is so natural for me to connect with both girls and boys.  I am inspired by their wisdom, playfulness and resilience. As I teach, there are moments when they start to transform their awareness and behaviors and I see the lights come on.  It is such an honour to guide, encourage and support our youth to become so much more than they see themselves.  Being a part of that process is magical for me!”

I wanted to know more about Fit 4 Defense, a fun and social approach to developing physical and mental strength for youth. As inferred in the title for this feature, Michelle’s passion for teaching really surfaced when she helped pilot Fit 4 Defense in schools. She saw the potential of this program to genuinely tackle the underlining issues that kids deal with, like low self-esteem, negative self -image, peer influences and overall lack of confidence.  With the use of self-defense skills, assertiveness training, self-care techniques, and increasing fitness levels, the participants blossom.  Fit 4 Defense is an international program currently being funded by Karate Canada and delivered in two provinces (AB & ON). The manual is also being translated into French and Spanish…big opportunities on the horizon!

One out of Michelle’s many goals is to teach people to become all they can be through respecting themselves and their bodies, helping them build confidence, positive self-esteem and improve their fitness level through physical training.  This summer Michelle is EXCITED to be delivering camps for young girls and teens at Okanagan College, in Penticton and Kelowna.  These 5 day camps will be dynamic, fun and an over-the-top experience.

Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you to pass the word to your friends who have daughters or granddaughters in the age range 11 – 16. Here is a précis of class content: Step through any fear of public speaking in non-threatening group discussions and public speaking sessions. Uncover your assertiveness with daily Fit4Defense training. Discover “What Not to Wear” from a fashion expert and let their certified aesthetician show you how to take care of your hair and skin. You will also participate in fun fitness classes such as Yoga, and the newest fitness craze, Zumba. Then put it all together and create a vision board of your future with intention and focus. This camp is guaranteed to empower YOU! Things to bring to camp: lunch, snacks, athletic shoes, gym clothes, a water bottle and a towel. For more info: www.CampOc.ca

Meet Raymond Maaske

RAYMOND MAASKE’S FOCUSED APPROACH TO WORK AND LIFE IS FILLED WITH PASSION, VARIEY AND ACCOMPLISHMENT

Through a friend, I had the pleasure recently of meeting Raymond Maaske and was taken by the combination of this man’s passion, joy, focus and wide ranging accomplishments.  I’m delighted to introduce Raymond, who since leaving home at 16 and facing many of life’s challenges, has shaped his life around the belief, “The impossible is just a little harder to achieve….now go for it!” Finishing Ironman Canada in less than 14 hours is just one example of his commitment to excellence. The fact that he has made family his priority while at the same time achieving tremendous success in business is further testimony.

Owner/Broker of HomeStar Realty, a Summerland boutique real estate business, Raymond may well have taken the longest recorded route to get from BC’s Nicola Valley to the Okanagan. He left his parents’ family farm at age 16 to pursue an acting and modeling dream in Vancouver.  While Raymond did not get discovered, he found the love of his life – while living in a car – whom he married.  Janice and Raymond graduated from high school and university together then sold everything they owned in exchange for backpacks and a search for a better place to live.  They spent a year traveling the world and while living at an Ashram in Rishikesh, India and searching for enlightenment, they narrowed their search to Vancouver Island or the Okanagan.  Neither Janice nor Raymond had a previous connection to the Okanagan but the lush orchards and pristine lakes attracted them.  They chose Summerland and anchored their life by purchasing a women’s clothing store on Main Street.  To date, the Maaske’s have traveled the world 3 times and remain certain that Summerland is the best place to call home.

Raymond wanted a university education and was the first in his family to take this step, making sacrifices as needed including working more than one job and even living on a bench.  He graduated from Simon Fraser University after 5 years with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Certificates in Chinese Studies and 2 years work experience with Price Waterhouse – Chartered Accountants. In fact, he has two degrees (Business and Theology), with specialized training and certificates in Canadian audit, accounting and taxation, as well as TEFL certification.  Talk about a commitment to learning!

When asked what makes his home-based real estate business unique, Raymond revealed, “My business operates ‘by referral only’ and gives 110% to those I serve to ensure they have the best experience possible. I hold myself responsible for creating exceptional, profitable results with the investments entrusted to me and efficiently serve my customers by not only being competitive, but by leading the way.” To get a better sense of the tools that Raymond makes available to clients, please also check out his BLOG.

I loved learning that between 2008 and 2009, Raymond, Janice and their 4 children spent 545 days traveling around the world, climbing mountains, river rafting, camel riding and much more.  Their adventure alternated between visiting modern cities and third world regions. While in China, Raymond taught English for 2 terms.  Class work was kept up to date and each member of the family regularly updated his/her blog to friends, teachers and loved ones at home.  During their journey, each family member wrote at least one book. A remarkable legacy!

Raymond is serious about making a contribution to the people who comprise the communities he serves. He has run for Mayor of Summerland, served on the executive of the Chamber of Commerce and passionately promotes Summerland and Penticton as great places to visit, live and work.  When asked what he does for recreation, other than travel and complete Ironman, Raymond added, When what you do for a living is a form of relaxation, then recreation becomes a big part of everyday.  We live in a beautiful place so biking, hiking or walking is just another way to get out and do and see the people and things you love.”

In case you haven’t noticed Raymond Maaske’s vehicle out and about, watch for a wine-coloured PT Cruiser with Home Star Realty clearly identified on the driver and passenger doors. Keep your eyes peeled and if you get a chance, wave or shout hello. In the meantime, check out his real estate market updates and send a quick email to let him know you have read this article.

Meet Ryanne Volrich

RYANNE VOLRICH SMILES WIDE, LAUGHS EASILY AND IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE BALANCE THEIR FINANCIAL CHALLENGES

Born and raised in Langley, RYANNE VOLRICH made her first visit to Penticton during her senior year of high school.  While on that trip, Ryanne fell in love with the South Okanagan and knew that she wanted to live here.  Less than a year after that trip, Ryanne established herself in Penticton and has never looked back.  That was 12 years ago.  This gal has an amazing spirit; she sees what she wants and figures out how to make it happen!

I’ve always admired the teams of people who train and give freely of themselves to rescue others.  As she was growing up, Ryanne’s father was very involved with Search and Rescue so it’s not surprising that in 2002 she joined Penticton and District Search and Rescue (SAR) as a volunteer. Talk about being committed to serving our community – Ryanne recently completed her certification as a SAR Manager through the Justice Institute of BC and is settling into her new role. Her volunteer path with Penticton and District Search and Rescue included becoming certified as a Group Team Member, and then Team Leader, First Aid Instructor and years on the Executive including the Training and Public Relations Committees. Ryanne adores the group of people with whom she trains. They meet weekly to keep their many search and rescue skills finely tuned.  Ryanne is very clear in saying that she trusts her life to these individuals and they trust her with theirs.

You’ve guessed by now that Ryanne is a people-person extraordinaire who has always worked directly with the public and needs to make a difference in people’s lives. Her early employment choices included retail, food services and hospitality.  After earning a Certificate in Human Resource Management, many more doors opened for Ryanne, including the possibility of a career in the financial services sector.

It’s fun to reflect on our career decisions.  Ryanne shared: In July of 2010, I began my career as a Consultant, but it took both time and lots of discussion to reach this important decision. Prior to meeting the professionals at Investors Group Financial Services Inc. , my understanding of the job was jaded.  I had thought Consultants were stuffy and uptight and that they just wanted to get their hands on my money.  I truly did not realize how important it is to have a Consultant. After doing my research and reflecting, I chose my position at Investors Group Financial Services Inc. because the company is focused on the value of personal, lasting relationships. It is about providing people with a complete financial plan that is customized to their personal needs. Once I understood the values of  Investors Group Financial Services Inc., I knew being a Consultant with them was a perfect fit for me! I meet people and share with them the benefits I can provide.  I like to think that my skills in search and rescue not only help in the bush, but also with my career.  I search for people I can rescue and provide them with a tailor-made financial plan!”

On the personal side, Ryanne feels blessed to share her life with Dean, a remarkably supportive partner who thinks she is equally beautiful when dressed in gortex and industrial boots, camping attire or a little balack dinner dress and heels.  Together, they have a great circle of friends with whom they kick back and enjoy everyday Okanagan activities like BBQs and water-skiing.  Adding a rich quality to Ryanne’s life is the solid friendship she shares with Dean’s 2 teenage daughters, of whom she is very proud.  Ryanne commented, There’s just nothing better than doing something you love with those that you love.  I hope the choices I make in my life impact those dear to me in a positive way.” Well said!

Ryanne’s favorite quote is: “Personal bests don’t happen by accident.” She is a bright, knowledgeable, an easy conversationalist and is definitely making a difference in people’s lives. If you would like to chat about how Ryanne can help you work out a strong, customized financial plan, please send her a quick email or give her a call.
